The duration of a Clickfree backup can depend on several factors.

Using the Clickfree to backup your computer will always occur in two phases:

1. Searching for files
• The Clickfree will search for supported files types that exist on your computer
• Typically, the duration of this search will be consistent even if this is the 1st backup, or a subsequent backup
2. Backing up data
• The Clickfree will backup all supported file types on the computer during a 1st backup
• Subsequent backups will be shorter in duration, as the Clickfree only needs to copy new files or any files that have been modified

The performance of the Clickfree backup will depend on the following factors associated with your computer:

• CPU (processor) speed
• Available memory (RAM)
• Speed of USB ports
• Any applications running in the background
• Performance of drives being backed up
• Performance of the Clickfree drive
• Network performance (if using a network based Clickfree product)

One or both of the Clickfree drives may not be detected, or the Clickfree may not be receiving enough power.

1. Ensure the Clickfree device is receiving enough power
• Depending on the product; the Clickfree may come with a USB cable, a USB Y-cable, and/or an AC adaptor
• Ensure that these are in use if they came with your product
2. Try plugging your Clickfree into different USB ports
• If using a desktop, use the USB ports located at the back of the computer. These ports generally supply more power than the USB ports located at the front
• USB hubs are not supported. The Clickfree must be connected directly to the computer
3. If your Clickfree was supplied with an AC adaptor, try plugging it into a different power outlet
• The LEDs on the Clickfree will light up when powered ON
4. Check that both drives named Clickfree_System and CF_Storage exist
• If both drives do not appear, the Clickfree software will not function correctly
• How to check for Clickfree_System and CF_Storage in Windows:
1. Close any open applications
2. Click on the Start button in Windows
3. Click on Computer (or My Computer)

4. Plug your Clickfree into USB
5. Under the section Drives with removable storage: two drives should appear on the desktop named Clickfree_System and CF_Storage

• How to check for Clickfree_System and CF_Storage in Mac OS X:
1. Close any open applications
2. Navigate to the desktop
3. Plug your Clickfree into USB
4. Two drives should appear on the desktop named Clickfree_System and CF_Storage

• Note: if either Clickfree_System or CF_Storage do not appear, the Clickfree may not function correctly. See this FAQ for further troubleshooting.
5. Double-click on Clickfree_System, the Clickfree software should launch

The Clickfree software needs both drives (storage drive and virtual CD-ROM) to be detected in order to work correctly.

This may occur when the Clickfree isn't receiving enough power, isn't detected by the computer, or is missing drive letter assignments.

How to check for and assign missing drive letters in Windows:

1. Using your keyboard, press both the Windows key + R key at the same time
2. A window named Run will appear. In this window, type diskmgmt.msc

3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard, a window named Disk Management will appear
4. Check to see if Clickfree_System and CF_Storage are present. At this point, you may notice that neither Clickfree_System nor CF_Storage have a drive letter assigned. In order to function correctly, both Clickfree_System and CF_Storage will need to have drive letters assigned to them.
   How to assign drive letters to your Clickfree:
1. Using your mouse, right-click on CF_Storage, a context menu should appear
2. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths

3. Click on the Add button
4. Select Assign the following drive letter
5. Click on the drop-down list and choose a letter

6. Click on the OK button
7. Right-click on Clickfree_System
8. Assign a drive letter to Clickfree_System using the steps above
5. Power OFF your computer
6. Disconnect the Clickfree device from USB
7. Power ON your computer
8. Once the computer is fully powered ON, plug the Clickfree back into USB
9. The Clickfree should be detected by your computer

You can schedule a backup to occur once a day, multiple times a day, or on a weekly basis.

How to change the scheduled time Clickfree automatically performs a backup when using a Clickfree C1:

1. Plug your Clickfree device into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button
4. Select the Reminder tab
5. Click on the Install Reminder button
6. Right-click on the Clickfree icon located in the system tray, a context menu will appear
7. Select Set Reminder
8. Ensure the Enable Schedule check box is enabled
9. Select how often you'd like the Clickfree to backup your computer
10. Click on the OK button when finished

Note: this feature is not available when using the Clickfree C1 on Mac OS X

How to change the scheduled time Clickfree automatically performs a backup when using a Clickfree C2, or C6:

1. Plug your Clickfree device into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button
4. Select the BackupLink tab
5. Click on the BackupLink schedule button
6. Select how often you'd like the Clickfree to backup your computer

How to change the scheduled time Clickfree automatically performs a backup when using a Clickfree C3:

1. Plug your Clickfree device into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Do More button

The Clickfree device will now attempt to backup your computer at the specified interval.

Note: The computer needs to be powered on for a scheduled backup to occur. If the computer is powered OFF, in sleep mode, or in hibernation mode; the Clickfree backup will not take place. If a scheduled backup is missed, the Clickfree will attempt to perform a backup once the computer is powered back on. When using a networked Clickfree product, both the host and client(s) will need to be powered on and connected to the network for the backup to start.

The Clickfree software needs both drives (storage drive and virtual CD-ROM) to be detected in order to work correctly.

This may occur when the Clickfree isn't receiving enough power, isn't detected by the computer, or there's an issue with the device drivers that are loaded.

Check device manager to see if there are any driver issues:

1. Using your keyboard, press both the Windows key + R key at the same time
2. A window named Run will appear. In this window, type devmgmt.msc

3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard, a window named Device Manager should appear

4. Click on DVD/CD-ROM drives
5. Check to see if any of the items in this category have a or or icon
• An exclamation, X, or question mark icon may indicate an issue with the generic DVD/CD-ROM drivers that come with your operating system. Please contact your computer manufacturer to help resolve the driver issue.
• To confirm the driver issue with your DVD/CD-ROM drive, try inserting a DVD or CD-ROM disc into your DVD/CD-ROM drive. Typically, the disc cannot be read.
• The Clickfree virtual CD-ROM (Clickfree_System) relies on the generic Microsoft DVD/CD-ROM driver working correctly. If this driver isn't working, is missing, or is corrupted, the Clickfree's virtual CD-ROM will not work.

Depending on your operating system, the Clickfree backs up specific file types, folders and/or drives.

How to customize the Clickfree backup using Mac OS X:

1. Plug your Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Click on the Options tab
5. Select the Select this option to backup your personal data by category radio option
6. Click on the Advanced button

7. Click on the Plus (+) button

8. Select the folders that you want to backup
9. Select the OK button

Note: By default, the Clickfree only backs up the contents of your User home folder. If you want to backup files located in other folders, you'll need to add these folders using the steps above. Correct user permissions are required to access folders outside of your home folder.

How to customize the Clickfree backup using Windows:

1. Plug your Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Click on the Change Backup Settings button

5. Select the types of files you want to backup
• If you want to add a custom file type or extension, click on the Add File Type button
6. Click on the Next button

7. Choose the Search selected folders only radio option
8. Select the folders you want to backup

• If you want to exclude folders or drives from backup, ensure that the folders are NOT checked off in this list.
• You can add external drives or mapped network drives (that are currently connected and recognized by Windows) to the backup by checking off the drives that appear in this list.
9. Click on the Next button
10. Finish the rest of the backup wizard

Note: The Clickfree C6 will backup the entire contents of all internal hard drives, so this type of customization will not be available. Unfortunately, the Clickfree C6 does not support backing up of external hard drives or mapped network drives. Correct user permissions are required to access folders outside of your user folder

Restoring to the default restore locations in Windows:

• By default, when performing a restore; the Clickfree will attempt to restore to the same folders where it backed up the original files. This is ideal if both the computer and operating system are the same, with the same users, and the same applications already installed on the computer.
• How can I perform a restore?
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Restore/Transfer button

4. Select Advanced Restore

5. Select the categories you want to restore
6. Click on the Next button

7. Select Clickfree will automatically restore my files to their original locations

8. Click on the Start Restore button
• Once the restore is complete, the files will be located in the same folder locations as the original.

Restoring to a custom restore location in Windows:

• Although not required, customizing where the data is restored to allows for greater control. This is ideal for when the computer, operating system, users, and/or installed applications are different than the original computer. If you're unsure of where the files will be restored to, then this option should also be selected.
• How can I change where Clickfree restores to?
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Restore/Transfer button

4. Select the computer backup you want to restore from
5. Select Advanced Restore

6. Select the categories you want to restore
7. Click on the Next button

8. Select I will choose a specific location to restore my files to
9. Click on the Start Restore button

• Once the restore is complete, the files will be located in the folder: C:\Clickfree restored files\
• From here, you can move the files around to a custom location if needed

Restoring from backup in Mac OS X:

• By default, when performing a restore; the Clickfree will attempt to restore to the folder named Restored Files in your home directory. Regardless if you're restoring from the same computer, with the same operating system or not, the Clickfree will restore to this folder.
• How can I perform a restore in Mac OS X?
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Restore/Transfer button

4. Select the computer backup you want to restore from
5. Select the categories you want to restore
6. Click on the Next button

7. Click on the Start Restore button

• Once the restore is complete, the files will be located in the Restored files folder located in your user Home folder
• From here, you can move the files around to a custom location if needed

While this is not usually recommended, you can delete a file from backup by performing the steps below. Deleting a file from the Clickfree backup will not affect the original version of the file that exists on your computer.

How to delete a file from backup:

1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Viewer button

4. Select the computer you want to delete files from
5. Select a category
6. Right-click on the file you want to delete
7. Select Delete this file

8. Confirm if you want to include this file in the next backup
9. Click on the Yes button to confirm deletion

Note: Deleting a file from backup is not supported in the Mac OS X version of the Clickfree software. Deleting a file from a Clickfree C6 backup is not supported.

Aside from the physical size of each version, there's no difference in (software) features if you're comparing products with the same model number.

Example: a C2 portable will backup and restore the same types of data as the C2 desktop.
Example: a C6 desktop and C6 portable will create a full image backup in the same way.

Desktop versions of Clickfree:

• Are larger in physical size
• Use a desktop hard drive
• Draws power from a supplied AC adaptor
• Desktop drives are typically faster compared to portable hard drives
• May be offered in larger disk capacities

Portable versions of Clickfree:

• Are smaller in physical size
• Use a portable hard drive
• Draws power from the computer's USB ports
• Portable drives are typically slower compared to desktop hard drives
• Disk capacities are often smaller

Your operating system may hide important files and folders to prevent accidental modification or deletion. See below on how to enable these files for viewing.

5. Click Show processes from all users on the bottom left (administrator rights are required)

6. Click on the column header called Image Name to sort the list alphabetically by image name
• Depending on your product, there may be several Clickfree related applications running in the background. You will need to manually quit these applications which may be named:

• FIBGui.exe

7. To manually end these processes, try the following:

4. A list of results will appear. Select Activity Monitor from the Applications section

5. Click on the column header called Process Name to sort the list alphabetically by image name

Erasing all of your data on the Clickfree requires the Clickfree's storage drive to be formatted. See below for additional infomation.

There are a few methods to erasing data on the Clickfree device:

• Erase data completely by performing a Master Reset
• Erase data completely by formatting your Clickfree in Windows
• Erase data completely by formatting your Clickfree in Mac OS X
• Erase an individual computer from your backup
• Erase individual files from your backup

Erase data completely by performing a Master Reset:

1. Plug your Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Click on the Tools tab
5. Click on the Master Reset button

6. Enable the Yes, I want to reset my Clickfre Backup device checkbox
7. Click on the Reset button

• Note: If you plan to use the Clickfree for both Mac and PC, perform the Master Reset from a Windows computer.

Erase data completely by formatting your Clickfree in Windows:

1. Close any open Clickfree Windows
2. Press the Start button
3. Select Computer or My Computer

4. Right-click on CF_Storage
5. Select Format

6. From the file system drop-down list, select NTFS
7. Click on the Start button

8. Click on the OK button

• Note: If you plan to use the Clickfree for both Mac and PC, perform the format from a Windows computer using the NTFS file system

Erase data completely by formatting your Clickfree in Mac OS X:

1. Close any open Clickfree Windows
2. Click on Spotlight (magnifying glass icon) located at the top right corner, next to the time and date. A search field will appear.

3. In Spotlight, type: Disk Utility
4. A list of results will appear. Select Disk Utility from the Applications section

5. Plug your Clickfree into USB, wait a few moments for the application to recognize the Clickfree
6. Click on Clickfree Backup Media

7. Select the Erase tab
8. Click on the Format drop-down, select: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

9. Click on the Erase button

• Note: Using this method to format the Clickfree will prevent Windows from detecting the Clickfree.

Erase an individual computer from your backup:

1. Plug your Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Select the computer you want to delete from backup
5. Click on the Remove PC button.

6. Enable the Yes, I want to remove this data checkbox
7. Click on the Remove button. Depending on how much data was backed up, this process may take some time.

Erase individual files from your backup (Windows only):

1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Viewer button

4. Select a category
5. Right-click on the file you want to delete
6. Select Delete Selected file(s) or Delete this file

• Note: The Clickfree C6 does not support deleting individual files from backup.

Admin rights are needed to use the Clickfree. See below on how you can determine if you're an administrator for the computer.

2. Select Control Panel

3. Click on Switch to Classic View. Depending on your current view, this option may not be available.

5. Your user name will state if you're the: Administrator, Limited Account, or Guest

How to tell if you're the administrator in Windows Vista, Windows 7:

1. Press the Start button
2. Select Control Panel

3. From the View by drop-down list, select Small Icons. Depending on your current view, this option may already be selected

4. Click on User Accounts
5. Your user name will state if you're the: Administrator, Normal User, or Guest

How to tell if you're the administrator in Mac OS X:

1. Click on the Apple icon
2. Select System Preferences

3. Click on Users & Groups

4. Select your account
5. Your user name will state if you're the: Admin, Standard, Sharing Only, or Managed

What happens if I'm using Clickfree at my workplace?

If you typically log onto a Domain when using your Work/Corporate computer: consult with your local IT group to see if Clickfree will work for you. Most Domain Group Policies will not allow for Clickfree to work in a corporate environment.

If you want to ensure that your files have been backed up, see below.

1. Plug your Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the View Files button (depending on your product, this button may also be called Viewer)

• If a backup was performed successfully, the View Files button will be visible
4. From the Current PC drop-down list, select your computer
5. From Backup Summary: Click on a category such as Photos

6. Check to see if your files are present in the backup

Note: If you can't find your files by following the steps above, your files may exist on more than one backup that the Clickfree has performed. Try clicking on the Current PC drop-down list, and choose another PC (if more than one appears). See if the files exist in that backup.

If you find that your files are not visible when following the above steps, there may be a few issues:

• The files may not have been backed up, or may have been deleted
• You may be viewing the wrong computer, if multiple computers have been backed up
• You may have only backed up one computer, but the Clickfree software may have created a new backup. As a result, you might be viewing the wrong backup

This may occur due to a 3rd party software conflict, which prevents Clickfree from accessing certain files on your computer.

To troubleshoot this issue, try the following:

• Ensure the Clickfree software is up to date
• Restart your computer
• Close any programs that are currently running in the background
• Add Clickfree to the exception list for any anti-virus, security, or spyware applications; or temporarily disable these applications during the backup

Note: Depending on the performance of your computer and the amount of data that needs to be backed up; the Clickfree may require some time to complete this task.

Under most circumstances, the Clickfree is able to backup external hard drives and flash drives

What operating system are you using?

• Windows
• Mac OS X

By default, Clickfree does not include external hard drives during the backup process. Here's how you can include the backup of your external drives:

Using Windows:

1. Ensure your external hard drive(s) are connected and recognized by your computer
2. Plug your Clickfree into USB and launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Click on the Change Backup Settings button

5. Click on the Next button to skip Step 1
6. Select Search selected folder only
7. Select the external hard drives you want to include in the backup

Note:Clickfree C6 is capable of backing up internal drives, and does not have the ability to backup external drives.

Using Mac OS X:

1. Ensure your external hard drive(s) are connected and recognized by your computer
2. Plug your Clickfree into USB and launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Select Select this option to backup your personal data by category
5. Click on the Advanced button

6. Click on the Plus (+) button

7. Select the external hard drive that you want to include in the backup
8. Click on the Open button

9. Click on the OK button

Clickfree will backup your personal data. If you're using a Clickfree C6, your computer's internal hard drives will be backed up.

Clickfree C1, C2, C2N, or C2 Wireless (C3) will backup your personal data (such as music, photos, documents, etc).
Clickfree C6 has the ability to create an entire backup of your computer, which includes personal data, applications, and operating system files.

When using a Clickfree C1, C2, C2N, or C3, the following file types will be backed up by default:

Note: If there's a file type missing from this list, you can add your own custom extensions for the Clickfree to backup by following this FAQ.

There are several scenarios where a virus may adversely affect the usage of your Clickfree

Will Clickfree backup any viruses on my computer?

• Depending on the product used (C1, C2, C2N, C3), the Clickfree copies your personal data from your computer. If a virus is disguised as one of the types of data that Clickfree backs up; then Clickfree may copy this virus to the backup.
• Some Clickfree products (C6) create a complete or full backup of your computer, which includes applications and system files. If any of these files are infected, the Clickfree may include these files during the backup.
• This applies to both new and incremental backups across all products.

Will Clickfree copy viruses back to my computer during a restore?

• Yes. This is possible, as the Clickfree itself does not scan for viruses.
• If a backup is infected with a virus, this may be copied over to your computer during a restore.
• An up to date anti-virus application may possibly prevent the copying of the infected file(s) back to your computer.

How can I remove a virus from my computer or Clickfree backup?

• Update your anti-virus software and perform a scan on the Clickfree's storage drive. You may need to consult your anti-virus application's user manual on how to perform this action.
• Try performing a scan on the Clickfree from a computer that isn't infected with a virus
• If an uninfected backup was successfully performed with a Clickfree C6, you can perform a restore of your computer's internal hard drives using Clickfree's EasyFix feature.

You can copy music from your iOS device (iPod, iPhone, iPad) to your computer using your Clickfree (C2, C2N, C2 Wireless (C3), and C6) as follows:

How do I backup music on from an iOS device using the Easy Music feature?

1. Plug your iOS device into USB, and ensure the device is recognized by your computer and iTunes
2. Plug your Clickfree device into USB
3. Launch the Clickfree software
4. Click on the Options button

5. Click on the EASY Music (or Import Music) tab
6. Click on the EASY Music (or Import Music) button, the Clickfree software will close and a new window will appear.

7. Select your iOS device from the list
8. Click on the Next button

9. Select the songs that you would like to copy
• To change where the songs are copied to, click on the Browse button
10. Click on the Start Import button to start the copy process

When the import is complete, Easy Music will attempt to add the songs to your iTunes library. Depending on how your iTunes software is configured, iTunes may recognize the change to the music library.

• If the imported songs are not recognized by iTunes, you will need to manually add the music to your library. Depending on your operating system, Easy Music will copy the songs to the following folders:
• Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\My Music\[iOS device name]
• Windows Vista, Windows 7: C:\Users\[username]\Music\[iOS device name]
• Note: [username] is your Windows login name. [iOS device name] is the name of the iOS device as seen by iTunes

How do I copy the backed up Music from my Clickfree to my iOS device?

• The Clickfree cannot copy music back to the iOS device. Music will need to be restored back to your computer, added to iTunes, and then synced back to your iOS device. Clickfree simply copies the music to a folder on your computer; the iTunes software has the ability to copy the music back to your iOS device.

Does Easy Music create a backup of my iOS device?

• No. The Clickfree or Easy Music feature does not create a backup of your iOS device.

To ensure your iOS device is detected, try the following steps:

• Update the iTunes application installed on your computer to the newest version
• Update your iOS device to the newest firmware
• Update your Clickfree software to the latest version
• Ensure that your Computer is able to detect the iOS device
• Ensure that iTunes is able to detect the iOS device

Depending on your product, there are a few ways to restore from backup. See below for additional information.

There are various methods for restoring your data to choose from. Depending on your needs, please read about and select the appropriate method that's best for you.

• Restore to default locations in Windows
• Restore to a folder of your choosing in Windows
• Re-image your entire computer
• Restore to a computer using Mac OS X

Restore to default locations in Windows

• Choose the option Clickfree will automatically restore my files to their original locations if both the computer and operating system are the same, with the same users, and the same applications already installed on the computer
• All files will be restore to their original locations
• When using this option, it's best to know where these files originally existed to begin with
• How can I perform a restore?
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Restore/Transfer button

4. Select Advanced Restore
5. Select the computer you want to restore from

6. Select the categories you want to restore

7. Click on the Next button
8. Select Clickfree will automatically restore my files to their original locations

9. Click on the Start Restore button
10. Once the restore is complete, the files will be located in the same folder locations as the original

Restore to a folder of your choosing in Windows

• Choose the option I will choose a specific location to restore my files to if you've upgraded your Operating System, or are using a different computer for restoring
• This is ideal for when the computer, operating system, users, and/or installed applications are different than the original computer
• When restoring to a different operating system, the file and folder layout may be different. When performing a restore, the Clickfree may not place files in the correct location, so this option provides fine control of where you want the files to appear
• Choose this option if you're not sure where to find these files, as you may not have remembered where they originally existed
• If you're unsure of where the files will be restored to, then this option should also be selected
• How can I change where Clickfree restores to?
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Restore/Transfer button

4. Select the computer you want to restore from

5. Select Advanced Restore
6. Select the categories you want to restore

7. Click on the Next button
8. Select I will choose a specific location to restore my files to

9. Click on the Start Restore button
10. Once the restore is complete, the files will be located in the folder: C:\Clickfree restored files\
11. From here, you can move the files around to a custom location if needed

Re-image your entire computer

• This option is only available for the Clickfree C6
• See this article for additional information

Restore to a computer using Mac OS X

• By default, when performing a restore; the Clickfree will attempt to restore to the folder named Restored Files in your home directory. Even if you're restoring from the same computer, with the same operating system or not, the Clickfree will restore to this folder
• How can I perform a restore in Mac OS X?
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Restore/Transfer button

4. Select the computer backup you want to restore from

5. Select the categories you want to restore
6. Click on the Next button

7. Click on the Start Restore button

8. Once the restore is complete, the files will be located in the Restored files folder located in your user Home folder
9. From here, you can move the files around to a custom location if needed

When the Clickfree is plugged into USB, two drives will appear in My Computer or Finder. The size and functionality of these drives are different.

When plugged into USB, the Clickfree device will display two drives in Computer, My Computer, or Finder:

1. A virtual CD-ROM device named Clickfree_System will appear

• The size of this drive will typically read 0 bytes free
• The size of the drive itself will be very small (usually less than 200MB)
• This drive contains the Clickfree software
• No files are backed up to this drive
• This drive is read-only and cannot be written to
• The contents of this drive cannot be deleted
• The Clickfree backup software resides on this drive
2. A hard drive named CF_Storage will appear

• This drive may sometimes be named removable storage, or Clickfree_Storage
• Depending on your product, the capacity of the drive will always read slightly less than what the box states
• This drive will contain your computer backups
• Performing a format or Master Reset will delete the contents of this drive, and will not wipe out the contents of the virtual CD-ROM
• Depending on the amount of content and number of computers that are backed up, the free space may fill up quickly
• If you run out of space on the Clickfree, you may want to consider freeing space from the Clickfree

Note: In order for the Clickfree to function correctly, both of these drives need to be detected correctly by the computer.

This error is displayed when an improper eject or removal of the Clickfree has taken place. See below on how to resolve this issue.

By default, most Clickfree devices are formatted using the NTFS file system; which is typically used by Windows. NTFS is not natively supported by Mac OS X and requires a 3rd party software driver to recognize any hard drive formatted this way. When an unsafe eject occurs, Mac OS X does not have the means to correct the errors that occur on the hard drive formatted in NTFS. Depending on how you plan to use the Clickfree, there are a few ways to resolve this issue.

1. Format the Clickfree storage drive using the Mac HFS file system format:
• This is useful when Clickfree will only backup computers using Mac OS X
• Clickfree will no longer need to rely on the NTFS-3G software driver
• Windows will NOT recognize drives formatted in the HFS file system
• Clickfree will perform better in Mac OS X when formatted in HFS
• How to format your Clickfree using the Mac HFS file system:
1. Close any open applications
2. Click on Spotlight (magnifying glass icon) located at the top right corner, next to the time and date. A search field will appear.

3. In Spotlight, type: Disk Utility
4. A list of results will appear. Select Disk Utility from the Applications section

5. Plug your Clickfree into USB, wait a few moments for the application to recognize the Clickfree
6. Click on Clickfree Backup Media

7. Select the Erase tab
8. Click on the Volume Format drop-down, select: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

9. Click on the Erase button


Note: this will delete your backups that are stored on the Clickfree

2. Use a Windows computer to check the Clickfree storage drive for errors:
• This is useful when Clickfree is used to backup computers using Mac OS X and/or Windows
• This error may return if an unsafe eject or removal of the Clickfree occurs
• Mac OS X will continue to rely on the NTFS-3G software driver to use the Clickfree
• How to check for disk errors in Windows:
1. Close any open applications
2. Click on the Start button
3. Select My Computer or Computer

4. Under the section named Devices with Removable Storage; right-click on CF_Storage, a context menu will appear
5. Select Properties, a properties window will appear

6. Select the Tools tab
7. Under Error-checking, click on the Check now button

8. Ensure Automatically fix file system errors is checked, click on the Start button. This process may take some time.

9. Repeat the error checking process again until no more errors are found
3. Format the Clickfree using the exFAT file system:
• This is useful if the NTFS-3G software continues to throw errors when the Clickfree is plugged in and formatted in NTFS and the above troubleshooting does not work
• When a hard drive is formatted in exFAT, safely ejecting is important; otherwise your operating system will want to automatically perform an error check before allowing you to use the Clickfree
• To format the Clickfree using exFAT, this must be performed from a computer using Windows
• Minimum requirements to use the Clickfree when formatted in exFAT:
• Windows XP SP3, with KB 955704 installed
• Windows Vista SP1
• Windows 7
• Mac OS X 10.6.5 or later
• How to format the Clickfree using the exFAT file system:
1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Close any open applications
3. Click on the Start button
4. Select My Computer or Computer

5. Under the section named Devices with Removable Storage; right-click on CF_Storage, a context menu will appear
6. Select Format...

7. In the File system drop-down list, select exFAT
8. Click on the Start button


Note: this will delete your backups that are stored on the Clickfree

If the backup still exists on the drive, but isn't recognized by the software, you can manually copy the data as follows:

What operating system are you using?

1. Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
2. Mac OS X

Note: manually restoring data from the Clickfree cannot be performed when using a Clickfree C6.

Manually restoring data from Clickfree using Windows:

1. Enable hidden files and folders
2. Plug your Clickfree into USB
3. If the Clickfree software launches, close Clickfree software window
4. Click on Start
5. Select Computer or My Computer

6. Double-click on the drive named CF_Storage

7. Double-click on the folder named S. This folder is normally hidden from view, so be sure to have hidden files and folders enabled.

8. Once you open the S folder, keep opening the subsequent S folders. Eventually, you'll notice a folder named Clickfree Backup. Double click on the folder Clickfree Backup

9. A list of numbered folders will appear. This represents the different computers that have been backed up by Clickfree. Open one of the numbered folders, you'll notice that the folders here will mimic the file system of the backed up computer. (It may take a few tries to find the correct computer that you're looking for)

10. Manually copy/paste the files you want to "restore" to this new computer. Feel free to copy them to any folder of your choosing; this way, you'll know where these files are located

Manually restoring data from Clickfree using Mac OS X:

1. Plug your Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button
• Although the Clickfree application won't be used for this troubleshooting, closing the Clickfree application may force eject the CF_Storage volume
• The Clickfree application needs to remain open during during this process
4. Open a Finder window

5. From the Devices section of Finder window, click on CF_Storage

6. Double-click on the folder named S

7. Once you open the S folder, keep opening the subsequent S folders. Eventually, you'll notice a folder named Clickfree Backup. Double click on the folder Clickfree Backup

8. A list of numbered folders will appear. This represents the different computers that have been backed up by Clickfree. Open one of the numbered folders, you'll notice that the folders here will mimic the file system of the backed up computer. (It may take a few tries to find the correct computer that you're looking for)

9. Manually copy/paste the files you want to "restore" to this new computer. Feel free to copy them to any folder of your choosing; this way, you'll know where these files are located

1. Ensure all applications are closed
2. Ensure the Clickfree is disconnected from USB
3. Click on the Start button
4. Select Computer or My Computer
5. Double-click on the hard drive where Windows is installed (usually this is named Local Disk C: )
6. Double-click on the Windows folder
7. Double-click on the System32 folder
8. Double-click on the Fixmapi.exe application, a black window will flash on the screen
9. Once completed plug the Clickfree into USB

Depending on the product, compatibility with Windows and Mac are as follows:

Clickfree C6 and the Clickfree downloadable software are compatible with:

• Windows XP
• Windows Vista
• Windows 7

All other Clickfree devices (C1, C2, C2N, C3 Wireless, Traveler):

• Windows XP
• Windows Vista
• Windows 7
• Mac OS X 10.5 or higher

Note: Clickfree devices manufactured before 2009 are not compatible with Mac OS X

Unfortunately, the hard drive contained inside of the Clickfree cannot be replaced with another.

The Clickfree software will only work with the original hard drive. Note that opening your Clickfree will void the warranty.

This may occur when a disk error exists on the Clickfree.

When the Clickfree's storage drive contains errors, it may not be properly recognized by the computer or the Clickfree software. Depending on what file system the Clickfree is using, the method for correcting this error will vary.

What operating system are you using?

• Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
• Mac OS X

Performing a disk check from Windows:

1. Close any open applications
2. Plug the Clickfree into USB
3. Close any error messages that may have popped up
4. Click on the Start button
5. Select Computer or My Computer

6. Right-click the drive named CF_Storage, a context menu will appear
7. Select Properties

8. Select the Tools tab
9. Under the section named Error Checking, click on the Check Now button

10. Click on the Start button. This process may take some time.

11. Repeat the Error Checking process until no problems have been found
12. Disconnect the Clickfree from USB, wait 10 seconds
13. Plug the Clickfree back into the computer

Performing a disk check from Mac OS X:

1. Close any open applications
2. Plug the Clickfree into USB
3. Close any error messages that may have popped up
4. Click on Spotlight (magnifying glass icon) located at the top right corner, next to the time and date. A search field will appear.

5. In Spotlight, type: Disk Utility
6. A list of results will appear. Select Disk Utility from the Applications section

7. Plug your Clickfree into USB, wait a few moments for the application to recognize the Clickfree

9. Click on the First Aid tab
10. Click on the Repair Disk

11. Repeat the Repair Disk pricess until no problems have been found
12. Disconnect the Clickfree from USB, wait 10 seconds
13. Plug the Clickfree back into the computer

Note: When performing an error check on a Clickfree that is formatted using the NTFS file system, the error check must be performed on a Windows computer. Mac OS X does not have the ability to correct any NTFS file system errors when using the Disk Utility application.

To avoid potential disk errors, safely removing or unmounting the Clickfree from your computer is important. Depending on your operating system, the procedure will vary.

What operating system are you using?

• Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
• Mac OS X

Safely eject Clickfree from Windows

1. Close any open Clickfree applications
2. Right-click on the Safely Eject icon located in the system tray, a context menu will appear

3. Select your Clickfree drive (depending on the model used, the name of the device may vary)

4. Wait a few moments, a message will appear stating when to unplug the Clickfree from USB

5. Disconnect the Clickfree from USB

Safely eject Clickfree from Mac OS X

1. Close any open Clickfree applications
2. From the desktop, click-and-drag Clickfree_System to the trash

3. Click-and-drag CF_Storage to the trash
• Alternatively, to eject the drives from the computer, you can simply press-and-hold the Control key while clicking on the drive; then select Eject

4. Disconnect the Clickfree from USB

This may occur when on or more of the Clickfree drives are not detected by the computer, or is not receiving enough power. Try the troubleshooting steps below:

Ensure the Clickfree is receiving enough power:

• Depending on the product; the Clickfree may come with a USB cable, a USB Y-cable, and/or an AC adaptor. Ensure that these are in use if they came with your product
• Try plugging your Clickfree into different USB ports
• If using a desktop, be sure to use the USB ports located at the back of the computer; these ports generally supply more power than the USB ports located at the front
• USB hubs are not supported; be sure to connect directly to the computer
• If your Clickfree was supplied with an AC adaptor, try plugging it into a different power outlet

Check to see what drives are detected by your computer:

If you're using Windows:

1. Close any open applications
2. Press the Start button in Windows
3. Select Computer or My Computer

4. Plug your Clickfree into USB
5. Under the section named Devices with removable storage, two drives named Clickfree_System (CD-ROM) and CF_Storage (hard drive) will appear

If you're using Mac:

1. Close any open applications
2. Plug your Clickfree into USB
3. In Finder and on the desktop, two drives named Clickfree_System (CD-ROM) and CF_Storage (hard drive) will appear

What drives are detected?

• Both Clickfree_System and CF_Storage are not detected
• Clickfree_System is missing
• CF_Storage is missing
• Clickfree_System appears, but I'm being prompted to format (or re-initialize) CF_Storage (or a drive named Removable Disk)

This error may occur when the user logged on does not have full administrator privileges. See below for additional information.

UACProxy.exe is used when the Clickfree needs Administrative privileges on your computer. Rather than asking many times during the backup, the software will ask for Administrator privileges once, and will always act on behalf of the Admin once UACProxy is successfully installed on your computer. To use the Clickfree, UACProxy is required. Clickfree may not function correctly with normal user access.

• Ensure that you are the administrator for this computer

  You must have Administrator privileges to use Clickfree. If you find that you're not the Administrator, please contact your computer manufacturer or the other users on this computer who may be an Administrator.

What happens if I'm using Clickfree at my workplace?

• If you typically log onto a Domain when using your Work/Corporate computer: consult with your local IT group to see if Clickfree will work for you. Most Domain Group Policies will not allow for Clickfree to work in a corporate environment.

Webroot Secure Anywhere software conflict:

When using Webroot Secure Anywhere security/anti-virus software, UACProxy.exe may be added to the quarantine list. This will prevent the Clickfree from loading UACProxy.exe when needed. To remove UACProxy.exe from Webroot's quarantine list, try the following:

1. Open the Webroot application
2. Select PC Security
3. Click on the Quarantine tab
4. Click on View Quarantine
5. Click on the check-box with UACProxy.exe
6. Click on Restore
7. A pop-up message will appear. Select Yes.

Depending on the product, this process may vary slightly. Select the correct product from the list below.

What Clickfree product are you using?

• Clickfree C1 (desktop, portable)
• Clickfree C2 (desktop, portable)
• Clickfree C2N (desktop, portable)
• Clickfree Wireless (C3)
• Clickfree C6 (desktop, portable)
• Clickfree Traveler
• Clickfree Transformer (for iPod, SE, Network Edition, etc)

To manually remove the Clickfree software from your computer, try the steps below.

What operating system are you using?

• Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
• Mac OS X

Manually remove the Clickfree software from Windows

• Uninstall the Scheduler software:
1. Right-click on the Clickfree icon located in the system tray, a context menu will appear

2. Select Uninstall, the Clickfree icon will disappear

• Stop the Clickfree processes in Task Manager:
1. Close any open applications
2. Right-click on the "time and date" at the bottom of your computer, a context menu will appear
3. Select Start Task Manager

4. Select the Processes tab
5. Click on Show processes from all users on the bottom left
6. End the following processes, if present:
• StartClickFreeBackup.exe
• UACProxy.exe
• OfficeGuardian.exe
• SacReminder.exe
7. To end a process, select the image name from the Image Name column
8. Click on the End Process button

• Delete the OfficeGuardianV2 folder from Application Data or Program Data:
1. Using your keyboard, press the Start key + R key at the same time; a window named "Run" will appear
2. Depending on your operating system, a different folder will need to be accessed:
• If you're using Windows XP, type the following into the "Run" window: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\
• If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, type the following into the "Run" window: %PROGRAMDATA%\

3. Click on the OK button
4. Delete the folder named OfficeGuardianV2

Manually remove the Clickfree software from Mac OS X

• Remove Clickfree from the Login items list:
1. Click on the Apple icon
2. Select System Preferences

3. Click on Users & Groups

4. Select your account
5. Click on Login Items
6. Click on CFAgent
7. Click on the Minus (-) button

8. Click on SacReminder
9. Click on the Minus (-) button
10. Close the Users & Groups window
• Uninstall the Clickfree software from the menu bar:
1. Click on the Clickfree software located on the menu bar (next to the time), a context menu will appear

2. Select Uninstall, the icon will disappear from the menu bar

• Stop the Clickfree processes in Activity Monitor:
1. Close any open applications
2. Click on the Spotlight icon (located at the top-right of your desktop)

3. In the Spotlight window, type: Activity Monitor

4. A list of results will appear in Spotlight, select Activity Monitor from Applications
5. In the Activity Monitor application, select CFAgent
6. Force Quit the following processes, if present:
• CFAgent
• SacReminder
• Clickfree Backup Assistant
7. To Force Quit a process, select the process from the Process Name column
8. Click on the Quit Process button

9. Click on the Force Quit button

10. Close the Activity Monitor window
• Delete the OfficeGuardianV2 folder from Applications:
1. Open a Finder window
2. Select Applications
3. Double-click on the Clickfree folder

4. Drag the OfficeGuardianV2 folder to the Trash
5. Empty the Trash

There's more than one way to perform an update on your Clickfree. If one method doesn't work for you, try the other. See below for more information.

Update the Clickfree from the options page:

1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Launch the Clickfree software
3. Click on the Options button

4. Click on the Tools tab
5. Click on the Update button

Update the Clickfree from the standalone updater utility in Windows

1. Plug the Clickfree into USB
2. Close the Clickfree software if it launches
3. Using your keyboard, press the Start key + R key at the same time; a window named "Run" will appear

7. Double-click on the application named SACUpdater

I'm unable to update my Clickfree:

• Ensure that you are the administrator for this computer, as this action requires admin rights
• If you're using a C2N or C3 and have used the supplied USB key to install the software: this version of the software can't be updated. You'll need to uninstall the software manually and then perform an install of the software using the Clickfree itself
• Attempt an update using another computer
• If the SACUpdater utility is launched directly from Clickfree_System/BIN or Clickfree_System/Start Clickfree Backup.app/Contents/data located in the Clickfree's virtual CD-ROM drive, then the update will fail
• Try booting into the 32-bit Mac OS X kernel to perform the update. Current versions of Mac OS X will boot into the 64-bit kernel by default
• The virtual CD-ROM drive named Clickfree_System isn't detected by the computer

USB 3.0 versions of Clickfree are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports. See below for additional information

• Any USB 3.0 version of a Clickfree device will still work on computers that only have USB 2.0 ports. Clickfree will transfer files at USB 2.0 speeds.
• Any USB 2.0 version of a Clickfree device will also work on computers that only have USB 3.0 ports. Clickfree will still transfer files at USB 2.0 speeds.
• If you only have USB 1.1 ports on your computer, the Clickfree may still work; however, the speed of the backup will be extremely slow.

Note: To ensure USB 3.0 port compatibility, ensure that your USB 3.0 host controller's firmware is up to date. See your computer manufacturer on how to do this.
