I am running Windows XP/Vista/Windows7 and I plugged the device into my PC as instructed but nothing happens. How can I get it to work?

Ensure that the Clickfree device is plugged directly into your computer.
(if it is a desktop, please use the ports in the back).
Once connected, wait 3 minutes to confirm the application did not start as expected.
If the application did not start, open your "My Computer"(XP) or "Computer" (Vista / Windows 7.) and check to see if you have both Clickfree_System and Clickfree_Storage.
Double-click on the Clickfree_System drive or browse the Clickfree_System contents and double click StartMyClickfreeBackup.exe. 
If the Clickfree™ application starts and begins a backup, then Autorun may be disabled on the computer.

FOR XP USERS:
To re-enable Autorun you have to go and download the official Microsoft Windows XP Autorun Repair Wizard. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c680a7b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&displaylang=en Please follow the steps outlined by Microsoft on how to use this repair tool.

FOR VISTA USERS:
To re-enable Autorun, go to Control Panel and select Autoplay. Choose the Restore Defaults button in the Autoplay window which is located at the lower left hand corner.
FOR Windows 7 USERS:
To re-enable Autorun, go to Control Panel and select Autoplay (If you do not have the Autoplay option, In the upper right Click on “Category” and select “large icons”.  You will then be able to select autoplay.) Choose the Restore Defaults button in the Autoplay window which is located at the lower left hand corner.

After connecting Clickfree™ Backup, the following message appears: "Clickfree™ Backup cannot start because you do not have the required permissions. Please re-login into this computer with an Administrator-level account."

Log into computer with an Administrator-level account. If your computer is on a corporate network (domain) then you will have to contact your network administrator to grant you the access rights.

Now that I backed up my data how do I restore the files back to computer or another machine?

The file restore process is detailed in the Clickfree user guide. Connect the Clickfree, when the countdown begins, click on the “Restore/Transfer” button.

There is only mention of Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mac OSX 10.5 (with intel processor). Does this mean that Windows 98, ME, 2000 and Mac OSX 10.4 or below, or a PowerPC are not supported?

Unfortunately our products do not support Windows 95, 98, ME and Mac OSX 10.4 and below due to missing requirements in those operating systems. Windows 2000 is no longer supported.

A virus is detected when the Clickfree™ application is scanning. What does this mean?

The Clickfree™ application triggered your antivirus program when it accessed an infected file on your computer that is normally not scanned by your antivirus program in its standard mode. As a result, your antivirus program has notified you that it has detected an infected file. Refer to your antivirus documentation for details on how to remove the virus.

Can the Clickfree™ DVD's or HD series products work on Apple computers?

Any Clickfree™ product that was manufactured after Jan 1, 2009 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or later OS (with intel processor). Clickfree™ Devices manufactured in 2008 are unfortunately not Mac compatible. Clickfree™ DVDs are Windows only.

Does your Click-Free Backup System back up programs as well as data files?

The various Clickfree™ products will not backup program or system files. These files were purposely omitted in our backup process, in order to minimize the potential threat of backing up files that are infected by viruses, or corrupted through other means.

When I do a restore/transfer from my Clickfree™ device to another computer, can I restore only certain files?

Yes, the restore function in Clickfree™ allows a restore/transfer of all or only selected files. Connect the Clickfree and click on "Restore". Choose the computer you want to restore from and then select the files you would like to restore. For more information, please refer to our User Manual.

Can I open files directly from the Clickfree™ backup?

The Clickfree devices have an embedded picture viewer allowing you to access pictures directly from the Clickfree device. For other file types, double-click on the file from the Clickfree™ "summary" window. Ensure the computer that it is connected to the Clickfree has the necessary application installed. If the application is missing then the file will not open.
Please also note that some applications will require you to use that application to open the files, rather than double-clicking on the files directly (like Outlook and Outlook Express).

Where can I find the User Manual for my Backup Drive? And why isn’t the manual included in the packaging?

The User Manual for your Clickfree can be found by going to www.clickfree.com/support. Then choose your location and device model. Select ‘User Manual’.
The manual is not included in the packaging to allow for continous updates as new features are introduced and to do our part in saving the environment by cutting down on the use of paper. The manuals are many pages, so we're saving a lot of trees!!!

What are the differences between FAT32, NTFS and HFS?

At a high level the basic differences between FAT32, NTFS and HFS are the following

  • These names refer to the type of formatting that is used to prepare a storage device for use.
  • HFS is used with Mac computers and can only be viewed and used from a Mac computer.
  • NTFS is a Windows format that can be viewed by both Windows and Mac computers.  Users can only copy data to an NTFS format from Windows. 
  • FAT32 is an older format that can be read and have data copied to by both Mac and Windows, but has some limitations that will prevent users from saving files larger than 4GB in size and is slower when compared to NTFS and HFS.

The Clickfree backup drives are set to NTFS by default. The Clickfree Travelers are set to FAT32 by default.  Any external USB drives used with the Clickfree line of Transformers may have been previously set to FAT32 by default. Please consult the manufacturer’s documentation for more details.  If a device is formatted in FAT32, then the Clickfree device will not be able to backup any file larger than 4GB.
When a Clickfree backup drive is plugged into a Mac for first use, it will automatically prompt to format in HFS. 

What operating systems will the Clickfree work with?

All of our devices will run on Windows XP, Vista (32bit and 64bit), and Windows 7 Beta. For Mac, any system running OS X 10.5 or higher using Intel processors.

Every time I connect the Clickfree device is it going to do a full backup of my computer?

When a Clickfree™ device is connected to a computer a full backup is performed. All future/subsequent backups will be incremental and only backup new files or files that have been modified since the last successful backup.

How do I add or remove file types for my backup?

Users can add file types/extensions that are not set by default by our Clickfree application.

Connect the Clickfree, and once the countdown begins, click on the"Options" button in the lower left corner. Then click the "Change Backup Settings" button.

From the "Change Backup Settings", "Step 1" window users can uncheck the file types/extensions that are set by default or add new file/extensions they wish to backup.

Finish the wizard to save the changes.

What is the “DC 5V” slot for on the top of my drive? Am I missing a part?

There is no adaptor included in the package but a DC 5V adaptor may be required if the Clickfree application does not start-up properly. The "DC 5V" slot is available for users who experience power related issues generally with older computers’ USB ports or if the computer does not have high-speed USB 2.0 ports.

What happens when my Clickfree runs out of space?

The Clickfree program will not start and you will receive the message "Not enough space on the destination drive". You will need to remove data from the Clickfree device.

How do I remove files from my Clickfree?

Connect the device and wait for the Welcome screen to appear. Then select View Files. Locate the files you would like to remove and right-click (or place a checkmark beside it) and select Delete.

Can I use any other USB cable than the one included with the Clickfree?

Clickfree devices use standard USB to USB mini-A type cables. We do not recommend using another longer USB cable because a longer cable is less efficient in delivering power through the cable. If you do not have the original cable, please contact customer support.

Can I plug in my Clickfree to a USB hub?

We recommend plugging the Clickfree directly to the back USB port(s) on your computer without any hub or other device in between. This will ensure that consistent power is delivered to the Clickfree.

In the middle of the backup I get a message that says "Clickfree has been disconnected from the computer and will now close." Then the software disappears from my screen, what causes this?

The USB cable may not have been completely inserted into the USB port on the computer. Disconnect the Traveler from the computer, then re-insert the USB connector into the computer ensuring that it fully inserted into the USB port.

How do I setup my Clickfree to backup more than one computer?

No setup is necessary for use on multiple computers. The Clickfree automatically detects that it is connected to another computer, and stores the data from each computer separately using the volume name that is assigned to your computer.

The lights on my Clickfree drive stay lit or blinks continuously. What does this mean?

This is part of the normal operation. The first light indicates that the Clickfree is powered on and the second light indicates that the hard drive inside the Clickfree is spinning/working. The light does not indicate that the Clickfree is backing up data. The Clickfree application displayed on your computer monitor will indicate how the backup is progressing.

I connected my Clickfree™ device and the lights are on. Is the Clickfree™ device backing up my computer?

How do I know when it’s completed? "The lights do not indicate that the Clickfree is backing up data. Some files were missed during backup. How do I tell the Clickfree™ external drive exactly which folders or files I want backed up automatically each time I connect it?

You can add files using 3 different methods by connecting your Clickfree, then choosing "Options", then "Change Backup Settings". For more information, please refer to our User Manual.

If I have a file that I backed up, then I edited it on my computer, will it be replaced with the newer version the next time I back up?

Yes, if a file is backed up on a Clickfree drive and changes are made to the original file on the PC (same location and file name), the newer version of that same file will replace the older one the next time a backup is performed

Can I backup more than one PC?

Yes, you can backup multiple computers, as long as the Clickfree™ device has enough disk space available.

If I back up more than one PC will the data be kept separate?

Yes, the Clickfree™ application will keep the data separate from each computer, on the Clickfree™ device.

If I transfer the data from the Clickfree™ device to another computer, will the data be removed after the transfer?

No, the data backed up on your Clickfree™ device will remain until it is specifically removed by you.

What’s the difference between the portable drives and the backup drives?

The Portable Backup Drives are smaller in size, have a 5500 rpm and measure 2.5” internally which makes them ideal for transporting in a schoolbag, fanny-pack, purse or briefcase. The External Backup Drives are slightly faster at 7200 rpm and also larger measuring 3.5” internally. The casing of the External Backup Drive is also approximately 2.5 times larger and slightly heavier.

Do I need to unplug this unit and plug it back in each time I want to start the software?

The External Backup Drives are the only units that come equipped with a convenient ‘BACKUP’ button on the end opposite the USB port and 12V jack. All you need to do is press this button while connected to the computer to run a backup. For other devices, you may disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to restart the Clickfree application.

When I connect my Clickfree I get an error, "Sorry you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, this device is not compatible.". What does this mean and how do I fix it?

The Clickfree software on your drive requires a patch. To update your Clickfree™ device with the patch:
1. Connect your Clickfree™ device.
2. If Clickfree application starts or if any error messages are displayed, close them.
3. Click on this link 64-Bit-Support-Patch.exe and save it on your desktop.
(Ensure that Clickfree™ device is plugged into USB port of your computer)
4. Double-click on saved file to run the application.
5. When the update is completed, click 'Ok' to close the update window.
6. Disconnect and reconnect the Clickfree™ device.
